Window hinge replacement
If your window has dropped, catches the frame or won't close properly, the hinges are usually worn. We replace them and set the window up so it closes and locks properly.
Send a photo for a fixed price, usually within 15 minutes in opening hours.
What goes wrong
Most uPVC windows hang on friction hinges, sometimes called friction stays, at the top and bottom of the opening part. After years of use they wear and loosen. The window drops, catches the frame, won't close or lock properly, or lets in a draught. Sometimes a hinge snaps and the window hangs loose.
What we do
We fit a new pair of hinges sized to your window, then adjust it so it closes, seals and locks properly. The price is per opening window, for the pair.
If a window is draughty or has dropped but the hinges are fine, we adjust it and replace what's worn instead. That's £150 per opener.
Questions people ask
How do I know it's the hinges?
If the window has dropped at the handle side, catches the frame when you close it, or you have to lift it to lock it, the hinges are usually worn. A short video of the window opening and closing tells us for sure.
Do you replace both hinges?
Yes. We fit a new pair so the window opens and closes evenly. The price, £150 per window, covers the pair.
My window won't open at all. Can you still fix it?
Usually. If a hinge or the locking mechanism has failed with the window shut, we can normally get it open and replace the broken part. Send a photo or video first.
How long does it take?
Most hinge replacements are done in one visit, because the van carries the common sizes.
Is it worth replacing hinges on an old window?
Usually, yes. New hinges often bring an old window back to closing and sealing properly, for a fraction of the cost of a new window.
